Joel Thomas

Hello! I am Joel Thomas. I'm a student at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, graduating with an MSc. in Financial Economics in May 2024. I am currently seeking graduate opportunities and internships in London, UK.

Biography

I am currently a Master's student studying in Paris, France. Having lived in France almost two years, I have immersed myself in the French culture. My current MSc. is the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne's M2 Financial Economics, a demanding programme that has introduced me to a range of new financial and econometric methods. My understanding of the macroeconomy, global finance market, and asset valuation methods has greatly increased since my enrolment on this course, and I look forward to adapting and utilising this knowledge in my professional life.

I have always been a high achiever at school, achieving three A*s (Mathematics, Economics, Government and Politics) and an A (Physics) in my A-levels, with two As in AS Mathematics and Government and Politics. I have a natural aptitude for problem solving and numerical reasoning, which has helped me excel throughout my education, particularly in mathematics. I am able to grasp concepts quickly and form links between different disciplines, a skill that my undergraduate education in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Durham University relied on. At the time of writing, I have achieved a 2:1 from Durham University's rigorous PPE programme and a grade of 16 (equivalent to an A+) summa cum laude from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne's Master in Economics (PSME) programme. My current enrolment on the M2 Financial Economics programme draws to an end my academic career in Paris as I seek professional opportunities in London, UK.

Interests

Having grown up in both Australia and the United Kingdom, I have had a very active and varied upbringing. Living in Australia until the age of 8 instilled in me the importance of an active lifestyle from a very early age. I have been a keen swimmer for as long as I can remember, a passion that continued throughout my time at Durham. When I am at my family home in Gloucester, I take every opportunity to take my two black labradors out for walks in the countryside. I also love to play (very) amateur tennis with friends, go on runs and hike the countryside. Quiz shows are one of my favourite past-times and I have a passion for reading and learning. I am always keeping up to date with current affairs, following particularly closely, developments in the global political environment and events in emerging market economies. Many of the research projects I have completed during my undergraduate and master's education have had emerging market economies at their core. My recently started blog focuses on these areas of interest. Feel free to have a read here if you're interested.
